Our Mission
HIS House exists to support people to overcome homelessness and achieve independence.
Our Vision
Everybody has a place to call home, a life that is meaningful and a sense of belonging.
History
Originally a large farmhouse, the HIS House Shelter was purchased in 1989 by Placentia Presbyterian Church. The church was uncertain about how to use the building until one member encountered a homeless family, with a pregnant mother, living in a park and couldn’t stand the thought of them spending another night on the streets. So they brought them to stay at the house. Thus, HIS House swung open its doors to serve its first clients.
HIS House has become a refuge for our residents, a safe place where homeless individuals and families can turn their lives around and move towards a life of long-lasting hope and self-sufficiency. Since inception, HIS House has provided safe shelter and supportive services for more than 4,500 homeless men, women, and children.
HIS House is supported by the generous contributions of time, talent, and money from many individuals, congregations, organizations, businesses, and government entities from the local community and beyond. From those humble beginnings, a rising tide of community support has increased our capacity to meet the needs of the hungry and homeless in our community.
The shelter has expanded to house 54 men, women and children with the goal of assisting each to transition out of homelessness and into permanent housing. Recently, a second house was purchased and a Second Step program was initiated to provide space for some to continue progress toward self-sufficiency after their time in the main house.
HIS House continues to implement innovative programs designed to offer the greatest long-term benefit to those who take advantage of them. Thank you for joining us in our mission. We hope you will continue to see the value in what we are doing and join us in this great work!
